How have you implemented what you've learned at Wasat to your service?

Biggest way I’ve implemented learning from Wasat is that I infuse my culture and heritage into what I do. As a convert to Islam, I fell into the early trap of thinking I had to look and show up a certain way for my Islam to be valid but Wasat centered teachers that opened me to the knowledge that my history and my culture is valid... “Islam is like a clear river that takes the color of the stones over which it flows”.

What changes do you hope for from your service?

I just hope that youth walk away with a love for the sport because it was beloved by our Beloved (pbuh) and because it is an act that can lead to salvation if intentions are pure. Additionally, I hope youth feel seen, affirmed, valued, and a part of something meaningful so that they can take those feelings and help cultivate spaces for others to receive the same.

Why is service sacred to you?

Service is sacred because it is a way for us to increase in gratitude for the Creator, humble ourselves when we feel like we’re hot stuff, and hopefully be among those who “believe, so good deeds, enjoin truth and enjoin patience” like Allah says in the Quran.
