Samuel Chesneau
Wasat co-founder & board member, Samuel Chesneau shares what sacred service means to him. Sam helped transition the pre-existing Neighborly Needs program in order to respond to the pandemic, and has since become a sustainable system for food justice.
Sister Ayesha Anderson
Sister Ayesha Anderson, is blessed to be a revert of 21 years, happily married and the Mother of four uniquely wonderful sons, 18 incredible grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
A Retired Respiratory Therapist, Sister Ayesha is now a full-time volunteer Community Liaison and Crisis Management Facilitator, who is highly active in mosque activities and planning, community out reach, new shahada introduction to Islam, Iftar and Eid celebration planning, and occasionally a little singles match making. Alhumdulillah, Masha Allah.
Dr. Adnan Mustafa
Growing up as a second-generation Indian American in eastern North Carolina, Dr. S. Adnan Mustafa came to appreciate the intersection of different cultures, and is always looking to gain knowledge and insight from others. Adnan is dedicated to community-based health. He has joined community projects in settings such as India, Malawi, and the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. He also works locally with various free clinics for the underserved. He believes in health care as a human right, and that true health is multi-faceted and has to be addressed from all angles.
Sabreen Tuku
Sabreen is a climate and social justice advocate. She has worked to bring awareness around the every day Muslim with CAIR-WA and MAPS-AMEN, as well as educate her community on the intersectional climate crisis and the ways systematic change is needed to save our futures.
Sabreen is also on the board of Blessings4all, a group dedicated to expressing gratitude through sharing blessings in the form of hot meals to the houseless communities.
Kanwal Yousuf
Kanwal is researcher and policy analyst with focus on community data. She is dedicated to bringing holistic resources to communities within their traditions. She relies on her Wasat teachers to learn and practice sacred activism to tackle policy issues impacting marginalized communities in Seattle. For policy change, she primarily focuses on supporting communities to creatively collect data for story-telling and using digital media as a collective voice for addressing the needs of communities.
Baraka Blue
Baraka Blue is a poet, musician, author, and teacher from Seattle, Washington. He is highly decorated within the global artist community for his original synthesis of hip hop and spoken word poetry with the tradition of mystical poets such as Rumi and Hafiz. In addition to releasing multiple studio albums, authoring books of poetry, and performing internationally, Baraka Blue is a prolific educator with a master’s degree in Islamic Studies from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. He has performed and taught all over the world, including at institutions such as Harvard, Princeton, and the School of Oriental and African Studies. In 2018, Baraka Blue founded the Rumi Center for Spirituality and the Arts which provides online courses to seekers from anywhere in the world. Baraka Blue has also conducted creative writing workshops for K-12 schools, universities, cultural and religious centers, and various organizations worldwide. He is the executive director of Wasat, a non-profit organization for spirituality, service, and the arts in Seattle.
Aishah Bomani
Aisha is educator, born and raised in South Seattle. She has served in both public and private education sectors, and currently serve as Seattle Public Schools first Digital Equity Manager.
Jamillah Bomani
Jamillah was raised in South Seattle and is a product of Seattle Public Schools. Jamillah started service work while at the University of Washington mentoring middle school and high school students from all across Washington State. She worked in accounting and finance through the financial crisis of 2008 when she then changed tracks to focus on education. In 2015 Jamillah participated in the People's Academy of Community Engagement through the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and has volunteered as a board member for two local nonprofits. Jamillah started working for Seattle Public Schools in 2014 and became a certificated teacher in 2018. She currently works at a Title I school in Central Seattle.
Maurice J. Murphy
Maurice J. Murphy is a PhD Candidate and Lecturer in Strategic Management in the Management and Organizations Department of the University of Southern California’s (USC) Marshall School of Business. He has a BA from Columbia University, an MA in Teaching from the School for International Training, and an MA in Management from Durham University Business School in the United Kingdom.
With respect to his civic engagement, Maurice is currently the chair of the African-American Muslim Leaders’ Coalition and a member of the OAV Muslim Political Council for the State of Washington, the NAACP’s Seattle King County Branch, Washington Coalition for Police Accountability, and Washington for Black Lives.
Amina Dawud
Amina Dawud is identified as a Muslim woman, child of Oromo immigrant parents, and a first-generation college student. Her main mediums are poetry and singing in which she uses her words to paint a picture for her audience. She feels that her purpose in life is to provide her community an example of how to heal in healthy ways through her own journey. She acknowledges that it’s not an easy thing to do, but with art it can be beautiful.
Favero
Sir. Favero has been blessed to call Seattle home for the past 35 years. He’s spent his days helping people care for trees, and is an avid food fermenter.
Muzammil Siddiqee
Muzammil Siddiqee Musakarim is a Seattle based filmmaker/photographer that strives to learn everyday about his industry while maintaining his deen.
