How have you implemented what you've learned at Wasat to your service?
Having a space that centers Islam and removes cultural baggage has brought me back to engaging in Islamic discourse. This has expanded into my service in my ability to advocate for my Muslim students in a more effective way. The classes and lectures have provided a way for me to find balance within myself which in-turn helps me to have space for the work that I do.
What changes do you hope for from your service?
My mission is to create a space where children feel comfortable in their own skin and grow a lifelong love for learning. To create a space where they see themselves in history and in the future and know they have a say in that future.
Why is service sacred to you?
Service is sacred to me because it is part of my family legacy. My mother has worked with the elderly for many years and has supported family and friends in reaching their goals. My father throughout his life served the community in many different ways from teaching to counseling and so on. I hope to continue that legacy and for my daughter to recognize that service to your community is a service to yourself and to find a way to serve in her own way.
